Turf Can Be Used In Addition To Plants For Biodiversity
Gardening ideas in more recent years has seen garden owners happily taking up the idea of getting rid of their lawn turf and using less natural materials to replace it.
Paving, cobbles and concrete have been on the increase in use compared to the traditional and natural products such as turf. Gardeners who care little for hard work have found that such modern materials allow them the opportunity to sit down and enjoy their gardens (or what’s left of them) without the need for regular mowing or weeding – but this attitude has been the cause of some unwanted problems.
The rise in flooding in many parts built up Britain has partly been due to the decline in the use of lawn, turf and other natural gardening products – which can absorb water and release slowly back into the country’s water system – according to several environmental experts who have monitored the situation closely. The problem is more acute in areas where the water table is already high and close to the surface of the ground – a sudden spell of excess rainfall in these areas where turf has been uprooted, put simply, can cause flooding more easily.
Turf and wildflower meadows for example are also an excellent way to encourage wildlife such as bees as well as increasing the chance of pollination and the survival of other species. It also removes a vital source of fresh oxygen and carbon dioxide removal.
In the US there has been a trend to replace not all but some of the vast endless green lawn turf landscapes found in suburban areas with a combination of wild meadows and turf. This is different to taking turf out completely and replacing it with manmade materials.
By using turf in conjunction with other natural landscapes, gardeners across the world could be responsible for increasing the Earth’s chances of surviving localised natural disasters whilst making a contribution to the reduction in carbon dioxide in the world’s atmosphere.
